    v8 quattro - what a great car.

Posted by Ken Lanham on 27th February 2008

So I’m finally settling into this new car a little. Driving to work over the last couple days, Im getting the seat adjusted how I like it. Tweaking the tone settings on the stereo, and generally figuring out how stuff works. With mixed city and hiway driving, I’m getting about 19mpg according to the dash computer so far. I’ll check it for sure when I refill. I was showing off a little with friends in the car too. So this wasn’t really a completely economical week. The v8 just sounds really nice, so I have been opening it up here and there. Its weird, the car is so quiet, you can hardly hear it, but there is a bit of a rumble from the rear when you open the throttle, and the motor is spinning 6000 rpm. Its really a neat motor. The thing I really like though is that the car is really smooth and comfortable, and really drives around corners in a way that only an all whee drive car can. Its a great sensation when you get used to it. You drive through corners with the throttle down, and you can really feel the car being pulled through the turn, really effortlessly.

    Warning Warning. Danger Will Robinson

Posted by Ken Lanham on 13th February 2008

I don’t know why I feel the need to come up with some catchy cliche titles for my posts, but there ya go. A paraphrase or quote from the Robot in Lost in Space.

I’m back to working on Irene lately. I put the car up in the air for a few modifications and touch ups on some of the now tested modifications. One of the first things I needed to tackle was adding some warning and indicator lights for my Megasquirt ECU to control. I carefully installed some shift lights and a warning bulb for indicating knock. I had built the circuits inside of the MS box quite a while back. But I am just now finally getting around to adding some output so that I can use these circuits. Here is the mostly finished product. . .

    indicator LEDs

The red LED on to the left of the tach indicates knock. and the 4 leds to the right progressively light up as I approach the desired shift rpm. And the neat thing is that it is all programmable inside the megaquirt tables. It should be pretty neat and very useful. Especially since my tachometer doesn’t even work 1/2 the time.
